Record Review - The OaKs - New Music
2008-03-03 13:27:00 by Dunc in Faces In The Sand

Artist: The OaKs
Album: Songs For Waiting
Released: 4th March, 2008
Label: Self Released

Imagine if Sufjan Stevens had decided somewhere a bit more exotic than Illinois. That'd be a good start when considering the nature of this, the 2nd album from The OaKs. Ryan Costello and Matthew Antolick (founding members) have put together a band of talented musicians, to enable the transition of their compositions to a live setting for this release. This album is subsequently an eclectic mix of orchestration, influence and style. You can tell from album standout, the instantly likable 'Masood' (that sounds like it's been part of my life forever) that this was more than a successful change, from their already excellent first release, check out the wonderful 'For Hugh Thompson, Who Stood Alone. My Lai Massacre, Vietnam, 1968' (hooray for long song titles)(hooray for brackets too.. I've used a lot today).

I just really like it, it's certainly a good listening experience with a fabulous back story you should seriously check out. As far as the music goes, it's energetic and beautiful. Enough talking, have a listen:
