You Should Know

The formation of Orlando's The OaKs is inspiring to say the least.  In 2003, Ryan Costello got rid of his earthly belongings and moved to Afghanistan to join a humanitarian organization called Global Hope Network International.  For two years, Costello worked in the mountains of Central Afghanistan where he taught returned refugees agricultural methods.  During this time, Costello not only picked up on the native language, he also began writing songs on his acoustic guitar.  Upon returning to the U.S., Costello met up with longtime songwriting buddy Matthew Antolick and the two began recording what would ultimately become their 2006 debut album entitled Our Fathers and The Things They Left Behind.  The duo partnered with Global Hope Network International for the release of the album and decided to donate 50% of the profits to returned refugees and widows in Afghanistan.  With musical compositions that called for more contributors, a full band was eventually formed and new, more sonically dense songs were written.  After the success and positive press surrounding their first album, the now 6-member ensemble is set to release a new LP on March 3rd entitled Songs For Waiting. If you're into indie folk with heart, purpose, and thoughtfulness, then look no further.  The band combines a wide array of instruments with message-conscious lyrics that reflect the inspiration and growth that Costello obviously experienced in Afghanistan.

Also, if you're in the Orlando, FL area, be sure to check the band out live tomorrow night (Jan. 5th) at The Social. -- Capt. Obvious
