I know, I know what they say: “simple pleasures for simple men.” Well, call me a simple man. One of my pleasures is finding new music. Music is such an integral part of life (at least for me) that it’s one of those quite little pleasures finding a new artist that I feel connected to. Sometimes it happens immediately and sometimes, though I can’t define it, some artists take a little work to find that connection. Recently, I was re-introduced to one of the former artists. One of those singer/songwriters who feels familiar in all the good ways. Like coming home after being gone for a long time.
Jamie Barnes is a singer/songwriter from Louisville. I remember having browsed his music some time ago but, for whatever reason, I didn’t pause long enough to be drawn in. Yet, my friend Taylor Worley reminded me of Barnes’ music the other day and I listened again. And again. And again. It’s just about all I’ve listened to most of this week. Many people will draw an immediate comparison to Sufjan Stevens because of the sometimes hushed vocals, sensitive subject matter and banjo. But that’s not necessarily bad. Judge for yourself. Here is a video of Barnes performing the song “Glory Days.” Though the audio is a bit on the quiet side, it’s well worth it. Enjoy:
