Behind the Scenes at New Bloods Video Shoot
2008-03-26 17:42:10 by ANIKA SABIN in local Cut

poloroids Director Donovan Vim Crony stopped by NoPo queer punk hot bed HOTBOAT a couple weeks back to film footage for an upcoming music video for Portland’s New Bloods (to accompany the single, “Doubles”). Crony is best known for hosting The Gaze, an episodic “rock variety show” highlighting NW artists (on which New Bloods appeared last year). In the basement of North Portland’s HOTBOAT house/venue, Crony stood amidst a pile of Polaroids, frantically capturing the trio from every angle.

Though I showed up intending only to socialize before and after the footage (and to pick up some boxes, being an ex-tenant myself), the turnout was less than glorious, with about 10 extras all together due to short notice and confusion over the date. So, along with the small crowd, I followed Crony’s directions: “Pumping my fists” and “getting really into it.” My dorky jives and hip twists will be forever documented. Thankfully, Crony focused on Portland’s Magic Johnson duo getting really into it in the front row.

The video details the process of making a zine, starting with the drummer/singer of MJ, Ana Rodriguez, snapping Polaroids of the New Bloods, followed by guitarist/singer Mando Blanco collaging them together into zine form. The theme is personal to the NW scene that New Bloods have thrived in, and Violinist/vocalist Osa Atoe currently has her own zine called Shotgun Seamstress.

“Doubles” is the first single off New Bloods Kill Rock Stars release, The Secret Life, due April 8th. The video should pop up around then, and LocalCut will get it to ya.

Kill Rock Stars is hosting its official Portland “Coming Out Party” at Holocene on Friday, April 4, with New Bloods, Panther and Horse Feathers performing. 21+.
