The Gorgeous Colours

After listening to this new album, I can't help but imagine that Ireland is a nation cut off from the rest of us. At least for the last 35 years or so, but I know that's not true, so it's seems more likely that the members of Dublin's The Gorgeous Colours have been locking themselves away with great old vinyl albums and letting their young minds soak up beautiful melodies. And now not only do they craft addictive melodies, but they don't encumber the songs with superfluous bells and whistles. What you are hearing sounds nearly organic, you're hearing only what you should hear. And because of that, they won't appeal to those who seek trends to follow, the hipsters searching for the next Crystal Castles, or MGMT, may not pick up on the talent it takes to leave things out, to excise what doesn't belong. Those who spent hours on line for the new iPhone (or whatever the latest 'must have' gadget is) may not latch onto this music, but they should take at least a minute and think about the hoary chestnut that goes: "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it". Now I want to paraphrase that and say something stupid, "Those who ignore the past are destined to forget it", I hope you know what I mean and will now join me in giving thanks to the big man up above that musicians like The Gorgeous Colours haven't forgotten a thing. In fact they're helping us remember and good on them for that... well, those of us old enough to remember... and for those too young to remember they're giving the best history lesson they'll ever get.

Here's a sample from the new record which is available now, you should get in touch with the band through their myspace (or through their gmail which can be found on their myspace page) when you've gathered your pennies together. The first four tracks on the record are standouts and these two are amongst those. "Hunting Something" opens with a guitar sound evoking spaghetti westerns and that vibe is aided and abetted by the horns that join in from time to time, but it's the vocal hook of the Yi Yi Yi 's that keeps me coming back for more. Preceding "Hunting Something" on the band's debut is "Miss You", a lovely, lovely melody which builds with force over it's never dull five minute length. The tension builds and releases several times, a little something which I just love in pop music, or any music. Don't miss out on this band, this record, and these songs.
