The Black August Hip Hop Project was started by the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement to promote human rights and raise awareness about U.S. political prisoners unjustly incarcerated worldwide. By leveraging the influence and global development of Hip Hop culture and by facilitating exchanges between international communities about the social and political issues that affect our global communities, Black August holds annual fundraising concerts that inform our collective struggle for a more just, equitable and human world.
Since August of 1998, Black August has sold out venues at Tramps, Bowery Ballroom, Synod Hall, BBKings, and the Brooklyn Café, to name a few. The project has featured artists such as Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Erykah Badu, David Banner, Common, dead prez, Fat Joe, The Roots, Gil Scott-Heron, Dave Chapelle, the Coup, and many more. Internationally, Black August has facilitated 8 international delegations of artists and activists to Cuba (1998, 1999, 2000, and 2003), South Africa (2001), Tanzania (2005), Brazil (2004, 2006) and to Venezuela (2007).
