Hill Elementary students win our hearts
2008-03-13 10:19:00 by Jeane Goforth in Scrollworks & Metropolitan Youth Orchestras

With 68 students now registered for our free after school music classes at Hill Elementary, I was too busy to remember to take pictures this week.

On Monday, my daughter, Molly, played her cello for the class, answered questions--and fell in love with the children of Hill Elementary. She woke up Tuesday and began crafting music worksheets with her morning coffee. She arranged to get off work early so she could teach.

With that many students, we needed Molly and several more teachers. Klinton's mom, an experienced music teacher, stepped in to help. Kayla Sealy took the winds. My son, Philip, helped with the guitar students. Mr. Greene, the very supportive principal of Hill Elementary, has given us more rooms.

The students bounce into the music room hungry and full of curiosity. On Tuesday, Deborah Helms arrived with three loaves of freshly baked bread. It smelled delicious and was a sensation with students and teachers. As the students carefully finished every crumb, Nick led them in a review of whole notes, half notes, and clapping rhythms. Mr. Greene participated in the exercise, proving he knows something about music.

We separated into groups by instrument, dividing the large drum class into thirds. I spent a lot of time helping Philip since he had originally planned to spend his afternoon working on his '67 Mustang instead of teaching the names of the strings to a dozen guitar students. He was amazed at how fast one student could slip across the room with one of the guitars, but he kept them busy with a word search race and color pages as they took turns practicing a few chords.

We will spend Spring Break lining up more teachers and purchasing instruments. Nick and I are determined to give every interested student at Hill the best music instruction we can arrange. We would eagerly sign up to serve 10 more Hill Elementary Schools--and will do what ever it takes to provide teachers and instruments for all. This is precisely what we were aiming for when we started Scrollworks.

We appreciate the support of the teachers, parents, Mr. Greene, Ms. White, the families of MYO and MCYO, and everyone in the community!

If you would like to help us purchase instruments and pay our teachers so that we can serve as many students as possible, please consider using the 'donate' button at the top of this blog.
