Today’s featured selection, chosen by Afternoon Show host Kevin Cole, is Jungle Struttin’ by The Lions from the 2008 album Jungle Struttin’ on Ubiquity.

Like any good DJ, this LA collective is master of its source material. Consisting of members of Breakestra, Orgone, Madlib’s Sound Directions and other funk and soul stalwarts, The Lions is a supergroup on steroids. Every member of this band has dedicated a tremendous amount of time to creating high enegy, authentic globe-trotting tunes. With their powers combined, The Lions have created something that has eluded most supergroups of the past couple years: a classic. Though no musician involved would claim dub or reggae as their forte, these arrangements and the quick sessions in which they were laid down speak to the contrary. Coming together in late ‘06, The Lions recorded at Orgone’s Killion Studios in LA though it sounds like the record was unearthed on a beach in Jamaica.
