GNU VOX: MARIA NECKAM AND SUNNY KIM
Maria Neckam, voice; Lars Dietrich, alto sax; Samir Zarif, tenor sax; Thomas Morgan, bass; Dan Weiss, drums; Sunny Kim, voice; Ben Monder, guitar
Maria’s voice is one of those you either love or hate, and so is her music. Uncompromising in her musical approach as well as performance she hits truth right at it’s core and strikes a chord in you … Her clear, airy sound has been compared to that of angels as well as wind instruments, the latter referring to her use of it as well - Maria sings like an instrumentalist plays. This is also reflected in her use of lyrics, as she states her point in an abstract way, making space for everyone’s own story in hers. Her compositions are as diverse as life’s surprises, merging modern Jazz with Drum N’Bass and Rock grooves as well as Indian and Classical music. You can hear Stravinsky as well as Björk in it, Billie Holiday and Debussy, Nikhil Banerjee and Ani DiFranco, Š but most of all, Maria Neckam.
With her cutting edge vision for music and truly unique vocal style, melding elements of jazz, classical, electronic and Korean folk music, Sunny has gained recognition world-wide. After moving to NY in 2005, Sunny performed as a part of “Tribute to Steve Lacy Concert” at Merkin Hall in NYC, which featured jazz legends such as Dave Liebman, Joe Lovano, and Roswell Rudd, and at “Robert Creeley Memorial” with Irene Aebi. She has performed in groups led by Roswell Rudd, Min Xiao Fen, Pheeroan AkLaff and Gino Sitson in jazz venues such as the Stone, Jazz Gallery, Joe’s Pub, the Knitting Factory, and Zinc Bar. Sunny has toured America, Korea and Japan appearing on numerous radio and television stations including Arirang TV, EBS, and WGBH as well as Korean newspapers such as Korea Daily and Korea Times. Sunny has performed with greats such as Ran Blake, Dave Fiuzyncski, Michael Cain, Carlos Alomar, Frank Carlberg, Jason Hwang, and Stomu Takeishi, and also has recorded and performed with various projects of her own.

The Nathan Eklund Group is a distinct jazz combo that released their first album, “The View From Afar”, in 2006. Their second album, “The Crooked Line”, is set to be released on January 23, 2007 through the Jazz Excursion Records label. The repertoire of the group is based on Eklund’s original music and his unique arrangemants of other’s material. Although there is form and structure to every composition, the music is intended to give a great deal of interpretive responsibility and freedom to each member of the group. Through this approach, each of Eklund’s works become a group arrangement, utilizing the creative energy and talents of the entire group.
“One thing that’s distinctive about the music on this CD is the care and craftsmanship that have gone into it. The music is accessible but never trite; Nathan’s writing…is full of unusual and often subtle touches that will delight any sensitive listener.”
