Stuttering to the Airport Courthouse through the steely sludge of A.M. gridlock, I considered the irony of someone selecting me for jury duty. God knows that were the law to nab me for the illegal chimpanzee knife fights I hold in my parking lot, I’d be the last person I’d want on my jury. After all, I’m prone to gross generalizations, chimerical conspiracy theories and a keen avidity for the palliative properties of a medical marijuana prescription. Unfortunately, so is the rest of this county. I feared I was doomed.

If you get called for jury duty, show up late. Bucking the inherent absurdity of an 8:00 a.m. arrival time, I showed up at five to nine; partially to protest the unholy wake-up call, partially on my correct hunch that the system of justice works on weed head time. More importantly, I wore a t-shirt of a halter-topped woman with a chainsaw. Which, I assumed, would either have me dismissed by noon or stop any and all garrulous goons from starting a conversation with me. (There is only one garrulous Goon, I respect and admire. Well, him and Mike Smrek).

Waiting in the jury selection room is one of the more gruesomely dull experiences imaginable, though it was kind of weird to see a grim camaraderie settle in. At one point, despite my tacky t-shirt, I found a woman sympathetic to my wild jabbering about the lack of a coffee machine in the vicinity. It was ridiculous; I can’t even tie my shoes while un-caffeinated, let alone render fair and impartial justice.

Living in Los Feliz/Silverlake, surrounded by a bunch of junior petite, Sparks victims, creates bit of a bubble. At a quick glance, the jury pool looked like the fat, floating coach potatoes from Wal-E, albeit with less cool robots and more blackberries. When I ate an apple at snack break, people looked at me like I was swallowing a gallon of arsenic-laced water.

Only in Los Angeles will they try to get you amped for jury duty by boasting framed plaques of the various celebrities who had also opted to serve their community rather than face prison or hefty fines. By the computers, I was accosted by signs that read: “Now Playing at a Courthouse Near You: Jury Service, with a cast of hundreds of thousands, starring [insert photo of of celebrity here].” Among the bold-faced names included, Ed Asner, Jamie Lee Curtis, Harrison Ford, Weird Al and bafflingly, Judge Lance Ito. The meta nature was too much for me. I wanted to collapse. Instead, I tried to check my gmail on the abysmally slow court-supplied desktop. A new song from Vince P and Justice? Hmm….

I’m embarrassed how rattled I got around 4:00 p.m., when they started randomly selecting jurors to go home. The losers would have to continue to another court room to potentially serve six more days. The Founding Fathers had promoted the virtues of a fair trial by jury. Men had died for that and other Democratic principles. And here I was, crossing my fingers, my toes and praying to my pocket-sized Jobu-like Devendra Banhart doll (now available at Insound). When they called my name, I felt like I was an NBA lottery pick, except much poorer, shorter and with less vertical leap. To paraphrase the great Homer, I had embodied the American way: you don’t quit your job, you just do in a half-assed fashion.

16 years after infamously making an ass of himself in front of millions on the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards, Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic has tackled the subject the worst bass guitar throw in rock history. Of course, Novoselic blamed the ill-fated toss on a number of factors — most notably Axl Rose. It was Axl who famously told Kurt Cobain “Get your bitch in line” after Courtney Love teased the G N’ R singer. The incident swelled until later when, as Novoselic says, “I was walking toward the stage and came across my now-friend and colleague, Duff McKagan. I think Duff was also under the influence. He must have heard something from Rose and had a terse word for me. I was already a little bent out of shape and instantly replied with the same sentiment. The production people grabbed me and we continued toward the stage.” Adding to the tensions was MTV’s prohibiting Nirvana from playing the song they actually wanted to perform; Cobain wanted to go with “Rape Me,” but the band was forced to play “Lithium” to appease the nervous network.

After the toss (which you can watch above), Novoselic rushed to his dressing room. Despite a bloody forehead, relief came in the form of Queen’s Brian May. “Paramedics came in and put a little bandage on, then handed me a long medical release form to sign,” Novoselic writes. “Standing behind them was Brian May, the guitarist of Queen, with a glass of chilled champagne. I signed the release just to get the medics away from me so I could take a sip of Mr. May’s wonderful medicine.” Novoselic says he still owns the bass, but the neck is a little damaged.

Study! Write poetry, attend our awesome poetry slams, check out live music, host "Overnight Freeform" on KUNM [Saturdays from 2 to 6 a.m.] and suspend with Ascension Suspension.

 What are you reading?

The Practice of the Wild by Gary Snyder and The Gum Thief by Douglas Coupland.

What was the best concert you ever attended?

The Allman Brothers Band at Red Rocks. It’s difficult to find more stunning natural beauty to complement the earthy and ethereal jams of The Allman Bros.

The description of your playlist is "Flirting with a girl at La Montañita Co-op on a Sunday afternoon in October." Did you ever ask her out?

Perhaps the opportunity will manifest in the near future.

The mix starts out jangly and upbeat but quickly gets kind of introspective and soulful. Why?

The course of the mix reflects the initial excitement of the connection and playful conversation. It progresses through my consideration of how available I could make myself while wading through the rigorous demands of medical education. It concludes with the reminder that to be able to provide quality care for others, one has to take time to focus on self-wellness.

Do you happen to be a musician of some sort?

I practice didgeridoo and can play a mean iPhone Ocarina!

A Saudi billionaire wants his day in court, but Michael Jackson is too sick to give him one.

This, according to one of Jackson’s attorneys who says Jacko is too sick to travel to London to answer a suit claiming he owes an Arab sheikh $7 million.

Excuses, excuses. Jacko has pulled the sick card so many times we’ve lost count!

Al Khalifa’s lawyer, Bankim Thanki, said the medical evidence presented by Jackson’s legal team was “very unsatisfactory” and Jackson’s illness could be treated with a bandage “if the diagnosis is positive.”

“It’s not the first time a sick note has been presented by Mr. Jackson,” Thanki said, also without elaborating.

Al Khalifa’s attorney says his client bankrolled a record label to the tune of $7M and wrote songs for Jacko’s failed comeback album.

The joint venture between Jackson and the Sheik was said to include a new Michael Jackson album, an autobiography, and a stage play.

The autobiography alone was expected to rack up $24 million, and Al Khalifa expected to reap the profits on his $7 million loan to Jacko.

But Jacko’s lawyers say the deal was between Al Khalifa and 2 Seas Records, a venture which never got off the ground.

As we reported in yesterday's "Daily Pulp," it's been another day, another lawsuit for Michael Jackson. A suit filed by Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the second son of the king of Bahrain, claims that Jackson welched on a contract for an album, a candid autobiography and a stage play, after accepting $7 million from the sheik. Jackson claims the whole thing is a misunderstanding, because he thought the money was a gift, according to a statement released by his lawyers. The case has found its way before a London court, but Jackson is claiming he is suffering from a mystery illness and is too sick to testify. However, MJ is hip to this whole new video technology thingy, and he’s offered to submit his testimony via video. "It would be unwise for him to travel, given what's he's got now," lawyer Robert Englehart said, declining to elaborate "for the obvious reasons." Al Khalifa's lawyer, Bankim Thanki, said the medical evidence presented by Jackson's legal team was "very unsatisfactory" and Jackson's illness could be treated with a bandage "if the diagnosis is positive." Here’s hoping Law & Order's producers are watching this case and are preparing one of their “ripped from the headlines” shows.

How time flies and soon it will be Christmas again. I just so loved this season as it unite my family. This is also the time when my relatives would go home from overseas and stay for a month or two with us.

This year, some of my relatives won’t be able to come home to celebrate with us including my old made aunt. She’s actually 65 years old and quite old. Last year, I gave her a DVD player to partner with her newly bought television as a Christmas gift. You see, she loves watching movies but since, she’s too old to go out, we urged her to buy her own entertainment set.

She called up yesterday telling that she can’t make it this year. So I’m thinking of the possible gift that I could give her. I actually spotted the Medical Alert. I think this will be a great gift since she’s far from us and no one will look after her except for another relative. This gadget is a good one since she’s not getting any younger and it will be used to update us about her health conditions. I still have to investigate which gadget is perfect for her.

Another exciting thing about giving this gift is that I can buy it online and have it delivered to her house. I know that we’ll miss her this holiday but we’re all hoping that she’ll be alright even though she’s far away. =)

Among those invited to trek overseas are Atlanta-based rap duo, The Ying Yang Twins, former UFC champion, Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell, model/singer Mayra Veronica, and comedians Gabriel Iglesias and Edwin San Juan. As part of the whirlwind visit, the group will spend time with troops and stage a host of hi-energy appearances and shows as they extend America ’s gratitude. During many of the stops, the Ying Yang Twins will treat troops to a special performance featuring their lead single “Wild Out,” which will soon be available on I-Tunes. All the proceeds from the single “Wild Out” will be donated to the Brooke Army Medical Center . The Brooke Army Medical Center is a health care facility that provides level-one trauma and prosthetic limbs for soldiers and offers graduate medical education.

Rappers Kaine and D-Roc, best known as the Ying Yang Twins, burst onto the music scene in 2000 with their hit single “Whistle While You Twurk”. Often lumped into a group of southern rappers who personified a party or “crunk” style of rap, the duo met in East Atlanta at age 16. Following a successful career underground, the Ying Yang Twins went main stream in 2002, appearing on Lil Jon’s “Kings of Crunk” album. Currently working on their sixth studio album, the duo has yielded such hits as “Get Low”, “Salt Shaker”, and “Wait (The Whisper Song)”.

The Ying Yang Twins latest project titled “Karma” is slated to be released in mid February, 2009.

Was Earl Simmons embarrassed at the prom just before his photo shoot?

I'll be honest: I have absolutely no clue how I ended up with a copy of DMX's second album, Flesh Of My Flesh, Blood Of My Blood, in my crates. (Apparently I had a lot of disposable income ten years ago. Ahhh, to be young again.) I've never considered myself to be an actual fan of DMX: with the exception of a handful of tracks from his debut, It's Dark and Hell Is Hot, I found his antics mostly tedious and repetitive. Back in 1998, though, I was clearly in the minority, as other music fans ate this shit up like fresh baked cookies. In fact, Earl's first album was so successful that Def Jam Records rushed a sophomore effort to the shelves in the same year. (I remember reading many articles lavishing DMX with praise, naming him the first rapper in history to release two albums in the same year, both of which hit number on on the Billboard charts, and I always thought to myself: what about 2Pac? Did he not count back in 1995 because the second album he released that year, posthumously, was recorded under the Makaveli alias? And Kool Keith has been releasing multiple albums each year since the dawn of man.)

Since "Ruff Ryders Anthem", the bizarrely paced tirade against the small business owner that was told from the point of view from a hypermegaconglomerate, became the surprise hit of the first album, receiving radio spins eve before it was officially released as a single, the song's producer, Swizz Beats, became DMX's partner in crime for the majority of this sophomore effort, whose title is so long and ridiculous that I don't want to type it again. That motherfucker went from handling only one track on the debut to producing nine tracks. As such, anybody who is on my side in the war against the overrated Swizz Beats should note that DMX is to blame for the man's "success", and also to blame for the spike in sales of Casio keyboards nationwide.

1. MY N----S (SKIT)
Do you recall the intro from DMX's debut album? Remember how good that intro sounded? Picture the polar opposite of that intro, and throw in some additional suckiness, and you'll still not be close to understanding how bad this rap album intro is.

2. BRING YOUR WHOLE CREW
The beat sounds like an afterthought, as if it was created in roughly two minutes. X also sounds exactly the same as he did on the first album, which is an act that had gotten old with all of his guest appearances on other albums. This can't be good.

3. PAC MAN (SKIT)
Generic gangsta interlude #4080 could have been much better if the fake thugs wherein were talking to the actual Pac Man. Running through a maze may have also been a nice touch.

4. AIN'T NO WAY
My God, this shit is boring.

5. WE DON'T GIVE A FUCK (FEAT JADAKISS & STYLES P)
As The Lox were running with the same crew as DMX (they were all from the same area in New York), it makes sense for them to appear on here: what doesn't make sense is the whereabouts of the third guy in the crew, Sheek. Jada's hook is unintentionally goofy, and can also be taken out of context very easily, which helps a lot, but the beat should have been more confrontational, M.O.P. style, given the title. Alas, I don't give a fuck, either.

6. KEEP YOUR SHIT THE HARDEST
The beat still sucks (this will be a recurring theme), but regardless of a title that sounds like it could be better used as a tagline for an anti-stool softener, DMX at least tries to engage the listener, so as a result, there's a bit more energy present on here than the song deserves.

7. COMING FROM (FEAT MARY J BLIGE)
Sounds incomplete, and Mary must have been included for the name brand recognition alone, as her hook is very weak, and her laugh is creepy in a "I've just kidnapped your family and am holding them hostage in the basement" kind of way.

8. IT'S ALL GOOD
The good news is that the beat is completely different than any we've been presented thus far. Swizz actually put his fucking keyboard down and opted to heavily sample Taana Gardner's "Heartbeat" instead, but the sample is so recognizable that you may be waiting on pins and needles for Ini Kamoze to hotstep in. The bad news is that Earl sounds awkward as shit over this type of club beat, and heaven forbid that any female receive a complement from X, as it will inevitably sound wrong.

9. THE OMEN (FEAT MARILYN MANSON)
A sequel to the first album's "Damien", but with 100% more mediocrity. Its attempts to be scary are more in line with direct-to-video slasher sequels than anything else.

10. SLIPPIN'
Whenever DMX says anything with substance (as opposed to shouting about how he doesn't give a fuck and he keeps his shit the hardest, a sure sign that he may require medical attention), he can either sound good or really really bad. "Slippin'", produced by DJ Shok, is a step in the right direction.

11. NO LOVE 4 ME (FEAT DRAG-ON & SWIZZ BEATS)
Whoever gave Swizz Beats his first Casio keyboard for Christmas should be smacked in the fucking mouth. Whoever let the fucker get behind the mic should simply hang their head in shame.

12. DOGS FOR LIFE
The song itself is no consequence, but the reference to Blood In Blood Out: Bound By Honor, one of the funniest (and entertaining as hell) gang/prison movies ever made, was a nice touch. And I say that previous sentence out of love: it's really a good movie, although it is really fucking long.

13. BLACKOUT (FEAT JAY-Z & THE LOX)
DMX upgrades his "N----s Done Started Something" posse by replacing Ma$e with arguably the biggest rap star in the genre, both in 1998 and today. The fact that Jadakiss shouts out Shawn during the intro, coupled with Jay's repetition of his mantra at the time ("You're about to witness a dynasty like no other"), leads me to believe that this was actually Jay's song first: maybe he decided to return it after hearing how fucking underwhelming the final product was.

14. FLESH OF MY FLESH, BLOOD OF MY BLOOD
While the attempt to (finally) wake up the listener is appreciated, shouldn't this track have been placed earlier in the tracklisting? If it had been, perhaps more people would still be listening right now.

15. HEAT
The hook would have sounded better had it been sung by either Glenn Frey or Asia. That is all.

16. READY TO MEET HIM
X has always been a study of contrast. He can be violent, but he is also very spiritual, although that doesn't mean that he feels bad for his violent tendencies. He'll kill you rather than deal with your issues, but he's ready to meet the Lord. He can be a good rapper, but he's usually an awful one. Here's he does alright for himself, but the sentiment is overly sappy. Kudos to Earl for not going full-on Billy Graham on us, though.

FINAL THOUGHTS: Flesh Of My Flesh, Blood Of My Blood is not a step forward for DMX, as the themes remain consistent from his debut, although if you consider the fact that the debut was just recorded and released earlier that same year, and that the label requested more of the same, it makes more sense. The problem is that DMX's second disc makes his debut sound like The White Album when compared to this mess. DMX is liked because of his style and flow, not because of his beats, although he usually manages to get one or two club bangers to shred on each album, but nothing on this album manages to sound like music at all: it's all noise, like your parents may say after hearing this shit.

BUY OR BURN? Burn if it you must, but I wouldn't. The disc has a couple of high points, but said high points don't come close to the good stuff from his debut.

BEST TRACKS: "Slippin'"

-Max

RELATED POSTS:
DMX - It's Dark and Hell Is Hot

Mitchell, 61, was on tour with Experience Henrix, and the cause of his death remains unknown. A medical examiner told the Associated Press news agency that his death
appeared to be from natural causes, but said there would be an autopsy.

Mitchell was initially recruited to play with Hendrix by the guitarist's manager, Chas Chandler of the Animals. He was quoted as saying he initially didn't believe that the band would be successful, until he witnessed Hendrix's otherworldly guitar playing for himself. Famous for a style of drumming that melded jazz with rock, Mitchell performed on Hendrix classics such as Are You Experienced?, Electric Ladyland and Axis: Bold As Love. Here's one of Mitchell's legendary drum solos filmed in 1969.
