Did you see how much Steely Dan tickets were going for during their recent Bay Area shows? You can hear all the same tunes (big hits like “Hey Nineteen” and “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number”), for far less coin, by attending Aja Vu’s Steely Dan tribute show.
With our favorite beverages in hand, he was so excited, I just figured he already had one pot of coffee in him. Phil had just heard thru the grapevine, that we were going to change formats for the automated FM in the city, to Top 40.

The automated FM was a recent purchase by us, and used old school technology. Massive 10 inch reel to reel tapes in 2 banks of three each, was all that made up the whole radio station. The large bank of reel to reels sat across one wall, with Jamie our obligatory secretary sitting right smack dab in the middle of the floor behind her desk. Imagine early Matrix 1968.

The winters were cold too, so being housed in a metal building, it was always a challenge for the small staff to stay warm. As Rick our engineer stated more then once, "man it was so cold last night in here chili, that it had to be a Three Dog Night".

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Rc_nDuVRiJs/SPM4ChSbHrI/AAAAAAAAAww/IcS3alvRUFw/s200/Three+Dog+Night+-+Live.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5256606806018039474" />
Three Dog Night was unique in 1968 with three lead vocalists - Danny Hutton, Chuck Negron and Cory Wells. Early recordings in 1967 under the name Redwood, with Beach Boys producer, vocalist and composer Brian Wilson, did help land them a recording contract with ABC/Dunhill records of Los Angeles.

Shortly after their signing they dropped the name Redwood and hired a group of backing musicians, including Michael Allsup on guitar, Floyd Sneed on drums, Joe Schermie (from the Cory Wells Blues Band) on bass, and Jimmy Greenspoon on keyboards.

Elis Coming - Three Dog Night

It has been rumored that vocalist Danny Hutton’s then-girlfriend June Fairchild originally thought of the name when she read a magazine article about indigenous Australians. In the article, on cold nights they would customarily sleep in a hole in the ground while embracing a dingo, a native species of wild dog.

On colder nights they would sleep with two dogs, and if a night was especially cold, it was a “Three Dog Night". *

Three Dog Night was known for their tight 3 part harmonies and covers of songs by such amazing songwriters as

Randy Newman ("Mama Told Me Not to Come") (U.S. #1) (U.K. # 10)
Laura Nyro ("Eli's Coming") (U.S. #10)
Russ Ballard of Argent ("Liar") (U.S. #7)
Hoyt Axton ("Joy to the World") (U.S. # 1)
Elton John and Bernie Taupin ("Lady Samantha" & "Your Song")
John Hiatt ("Sure As I'm Sittin' Here") (U.S. #16)
Leo Sayer ("The Show Must Go On") (U.S. #4) Paul Williams ("An Old Fashioned Love Song") (U.S. #4)) and ("Out in the Country") (U.S. #15).
Harry Nilsson ("One) (U.S. # 5)
"Easy to Be Hard" (Galt MacDermot, James Rado, Gerome Ragni) ( U.S. # 4)
"Celebrate" (Garry Bonner, Allen Gordon) ( U.S. # 15)
"One Man Band" (Billy Fox, January Tyme, Thomas Jefferson Kaye) ( U.S. # 19)
"Never Been to Spain" (Hoyt Axton) (U.S. # 5)
"The Family of Man" (Jack Conrad, Williams) ( U.S. # 12)
"Black and White" (David I. Arkin, Earl Robinson) (U.S. # 1)
"Pieces of April" (Dave Loggins) (U.S. # 19)
"Shambala" (Daniel Moore) (U.S. # 3)
"Let Me Serenade You" (John Finely) (U.S. # 17)

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Rc_nDuVRiJs/SPM41bHaP7I/AAAAAAAAAw4/jaOW9CG5-jo/s200/Three+Dog+Night+-+It+Ain%27t+Easy.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5256607680534560690" />
Three Dog Night has earned 13 gold albums and recorded 21 Billboard Top 40 hits, 7 of which went gold. Their first gold record was "One" (U.S. #5), which had been written and recorded by Harry Nilsson. They had three U.S. number one songs: "Mama Told Me Not to Come", "Joy to the World", and "Black and White". Dunhill Records claimed 40 million LP units sold by them during that time period.

Joe Schermie was let go in early 1973 after disagreements with the band. In late 1974, Allsup & Sneed left to form a new band, S.S. Fools, with Schermie. By 1976 the streak of hit records had ended and Cory Hutton left and was succeeded in a short lived lineup by Jay Gruska.

Three Dog Night ended up playing what would end up being their final show (at the time) at the Greek Theater in LA on July 26th, 1976. The group's end was brought about, at least partly, due to the drug addiction problems of band members Hutton, Negron & Greenspoon.

In 1985 a spring/summer Reunion tour was postponed to allow Negron time to check into a rehab to combat his recurring drug problem.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Rc_nDuVRiJs/SPM5MUGYLbI/AAAAAAAAAxA/8V-OWy88qS0/s200/Three+Dog+Night-Naturally.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5256608073788173746" />Elton John has credited Three Dog Night's cover of "Your Song" with being a major factor in catapulting him to stardom.

Original bassist Joe Schermie died on March 26, 2002 of a heart attack

Sky Television has launched a new ad campaign (Oct 2007) in the UK. The advert, promoting the company's aspirations to be seen as an environmentally friendly company, uses 'Joy To The World' as its backing track.

As of 2008, they are still very active. The current lineup features founding members Wells and Hutton on lead vocals, Greenspoon, Allsup, Paul Kingery on bass and vocals and Pat Bautz on drums. Three Dog Night continues to perform an average of 85 concert dates a year. The group's first new studio album, is expected to be released shortly. Producer Richie Podolor came out of retirement to produce some of the new album tracks. The album is expected sometime in 2008. Three Dog Night has not recorded a full-length album since 1976's American Pastime, their new release will be the first in 32 years

As Always,

Peace

Record Man in Redwood City, whose selection of vinyl I was impressed with last time I went is having their parking lot sale this weekend, September 20 and 21 starting at 8am both days. Though it’s normally a bit (or a lot) expensive and I’ve heard complaints about customer service, both of those should be mitigated by this weekend’s format: 35000 records at a dollar a pop out in the parking lot for your perusal.

Their annoucement after the jump:

Hey everybody it’s “Record-Palooza-time” in Redwood City! That’s right, the waiting is over! The Record Man Parking Lot Sale is upon us!
Be sure to mark your calendar, September 20-21. BE THERE! You snooze you lose.
We will be starting at 8 a.m. both days. If you can’t be there early “don’t sweat it!” We have over 500 boxes of LP’s to choose from…approx. 35,000 records! Believe me, there will be “good stuff” all weekend long!
We have all categories of music – Rock, soul, jazz, EZ, country, folk, classical, soundtrax, blues, reggae, etc. The records are broken down by category and placed on tables under shaded awnings for easy access and comfort.
The records are $1 a disc, doubles $2 and triples and box sets $3.
This year we are adding almost 10,000 compacts discs at $1 each! Also, we will have a good selection of dvd’s!
There will be no parking in The Record Man parking lot. There is plenty of parking across the street on Diller St. and Franklin St. Also, around the corner there should be parking.
We will be accepting all major credit cards and debit cards.
Again, the sale starts @ 8am sharp! There will be no early birds or sneak previews.
Again, mark your calendar!
Refreshments will be provided by THE SAXON TWINS

I once went snorkeling with Tommy Castro in Mexico. Ahh, but that’s a story for another time. Right now, I’m just looking to end this column with a mention that Castro’s great blues band will headline the Legendary Rhythm and Blues Revue on Friday at the Fox Theatre in Redwood City.

Other acts on the bill include Magic Dick and Janiva Magness (who is one of my favorite blues vocalists). Details available at 650-369-4119 and www.foxdream.com.
