John Legend Takes It to the Next Level
R&B singer says “you have to keep proving yourself”

The multi-talented singer, pianist and songwriter John Legend knows what it takes to stay on top in today’s music industry, and that’s quite evident with the release of his new CD, Evolver. The five-time Grammy Award-winner sat down with Jet magazine during his current tour to talk about how this new project is a “shift” from his usual sound. “You have to keep proving yourself. The fans and people can decide they are done with you at any time.” (p. 44)

Where Is Sir Mix-A-Lot?
His 1992 song Baby Got Back, an ode to curvaceous buttocks, won Sir Mix-A-Lot a Grammy Award and one of the best-loved songs in rap music history. But, where is he now? Jet magazine caught up with the famed rapper to see what he’s up to these days. (p. 26)

J. Anthony Brown Is in the Spotlight

Comedian J. Anthony Brown believes that life is too short and if you’ve been blessed with many talents, it’s up to you to use them. “We kick ourselves in the butt when we’re in the old folks home and say we should have done it.” (p. 30)

Blacks Take Key White House Slots

Valerie Jarrett, Desirée Rogers and Melody Barnes were among the American-Americans whom President-elect Barack Obama identified for key positions in his administration. (p. 6)

THE DEC. 15, 2008 ISSUE OF JET MAGAZINE IS ON SALE MONDAY, DEC. 8, 2008.

Often times, the best kind of song is that which offers listeners a journey: ups and downs, climaxes and crescendos, all encapsulated within the art of storytelling and musicianship. That’s a lot of imposing elements to get right for overwhelmed artists – but when they do manage to come together, it’s nothing less than magic. And that is why I turn with a heavy heart to discuss With Complete Glossary for Squares, the sophomore album of Virginia-based trio The Crowd Scene. Despite a wealth of talent and plenty of moody ambiance, Glossary’s offerings take listeners nowhere, gliding listlessly along from track to track with an overbearing case of ennui. As a result, The Crowd Scene threaten to put audiences to sleep rather than stimulate their earbuds.

Husband and wife Grahame Davies and Anne Rogers make up the meat of this lethargic outfit, supported on percussion by Evan Pollack. Together they evoke a kind of tired, 60’s-themed pop gloom ripped straight from the rainy day music of John Lennon. In other words, Oasis without the electric buzz and tiresome anthem-sized singalongs. Unfortunately, The Crowd Scene can’t manufacture anything more interesting in their intimate approach on Glossary, with every track coming across as like-colored Play-Doh formed into slightly-disparate shapes. As Davies barely manages to stretch his slender voice over the sluggish melodies, listeners will start to wonder whether the album was produced during a sleepwalk.

“Walk Up To The Heath” is unadorned acoustical balladeering slowed down to a snail’s crawl. This, despite solid guitar work and serviceable melodies throughout – a ironic frustration on nearly every track. “Edward Learjet” is Lennon through and through, right down to the playful vocal screeds, but fails to rise above its melancholy pomp. Which brings us to another issue: despite the soft dynamics of Glossary’s music, Davies’ voice rarely distinguishes itself. Often times – such as on “Cracked Leather Seat” – his effort sounds like an afterthought, despite an accompaniment of nothing more than soft acoustics. The overall effect is that of a sick man broadcasting from his bedside, with barely enough energy to even lift his head.

Certainly, that kind of quirk distinguishes Davies and The Crowd Scene from rough-and-tumble rock outfits who still prefer “scream-o” music. Yet it is also severely limiting: time and time again, tracks struggle to simply go about a crawl, lulling over and over like a slowly-sinking rock. “It’s Not Easier” is a chain of excruciating stutters, while pieces such as “Trick Photography” and “Secretly Sorry” seem cut from the same exhausted melody line. The album’s best entry, “Great Jones Street,” is still incredibly airy and limp, despite a charming chorus that bops along like a colorful bicycle.

Despite all of this, it’s impossible to deny the talent and confidence of The Crowd Scene – leaving many a fan mildly frustrated to be sure, and not unreasonable in expecting more from a trio with such great components. Yet as listeners skip from track to track on Glossary, they’ll be left hanging for the next step – the increased drama, the payoff, the hook, the whatever-you-call-it that begs and then demands your ear’s attention. Sadly, there’s nothing on Glossary that demands such interest or excitement.

And this December Monday morning begins with a bonus version of Tom Allen's Blog Question O' The Week, on Radio 2 Morning : Where do the best songs in this country come from, east or west?

Because last week's responses were so interesting and filled with such pith and vinegar, Tom's decided to continue asking the question this week, with a few refinements. One of them is the starting point. Here's how Tom explains it:

"Tell us what you think the absolute best Canadian songs are – new, old, sad, patriotic, angry, happy, ambivalent, dumb, impenetrable, maudlin (there’s room for everything if it’s really good)…and then tell us where you think that song comes from, and why. No holds barred on the 'where' part. If you think you can convincingly argue that Four Strong Winds is an eastern song (and good luck with that), then fill your boots."

You can respond right here on the Radio 2 Blog -- Tom reads 'em all, or here or here.

The music developed when poor Black workers did the "Great Migration" from the South into the industrial cities of the North such as Chicago in the first half of the twentieth century.

Chicago Blues has a more extended palette of notes than the standard six-note blues scale; often, notes from the major scale and dominant 9th chords are added, which gives the music a more "jazz feel" whilst still being in the confines of the blues genre. Chicago blues is also known for its heavy rolling bass.

Sweet Home Chicago a long-lost piece of musical history which bridges the gap between the modern blues movement of the 60's and the 70's rock era...listen to the ''original'' Chicago Blues reunion and enjoy! This CD features remastered live and studio tracks from the Kent Classic Blues Archives.

Well-known Chicago blues players include singer/songwriters such as Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, and Willie Dixon; guitar players such as Freddie King, Buddy Guy, Bo Diddley and Elmore James ("The King of Slide Guitar"); and "harp" (blues slang for harmonica) players such as Big Walter Horton, Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson I, Charlie Musselwhite and Junior Wells. Also Jimmy Reed.

Chess Records, run by brothers Leonard and Phil Chess, was probably the most famous of the Chicago record labels to feature or promote blues. Musician and critic Cub Koda even described Chess Records as "America's greatest blues label." It was active from 1956—1969 when the brothers sold the company. Most solo artists also did double duty as session musicians on the records of others.

Checker Records was a subsidiary of Chess that recorded Chicago blues greats such as Bo Diddley, J.B. Lenoir and Sonny Boy Williamson II.

Delmark was formed when Bob Koester moved his Delmar label from St. Louis to Chicago in 1958 and remains active today. They are still known for Jazz and Blues. Artist recorded by the label includes Roscoe Mitchell, Junior Wells and Sonny Boy Williamson II.

Alligator Records was formed in 1971 by Bruce Iglauer, a former employee of Delmark and remains a premier blues label to this day. They have recorded Chicago blues greats such as Koko Taylor, Buddy Guy, Otis Rush, Hound Dog Taylor and Eddy "The Chief" Clearwater.

01.
As a long time Queen fan, and a very serious collector, I was very excited when I heard that Brian
and Roger were going to release something. I was certainly less excited to find that ex Free / Bad
Company vocalist was going to add his two cents! The last recorded Queen material was the 1997
tribute to Freddie No One But You. This was and will always be the final Queen song in my
opinion. Although Freddie was gone, there was a magic about the tune, and John Deacon was still
part of the band...it seems he knew when to pack it in.
I don't want to review this album track by track as I did with EVERY other Queen album, because this
is simply not a Queen album...it's a bad collaboration that really didn't work. The ballads,
although musically good, have some absolutely terrible lyrics courtesy of Paul Rogers. The rockers
never rock as hard as Queen with Freddie, the ballads aren't as emotional as they were with Freddie,
and there is nothing that would tell you this is Queen apart from Brian's distinct guitar sound.
Queen were always a rather regal band...they always maintained some level of majesty. You don't
have to like Queen's music, but if it was recorded in 1974 or 1991...you knew it was Queen. This
album is a collection of disjointed songs that do nothing for me at all. There are attempts at
anthemic choruses on this album, and for the most part they get the job done...but at times they
also sound forced, like a band trying way too hard at recapturing some identity and failing.
If you look at this as just an album of music, and you like blues / hard rock, go grab it...just
don't expect any of the trademark sound. Even Hot Space is better than this simply because of
Freddie's involvement on the former. In my opinion, the song Say It's Not True, written by Roger
Taylor, may be the best song on the album. It contains vocal performances from all three members
and a great guitar solo...it may be the only song on the album where you can hear the Queen of
old...begging to be put to sleep before all dignity is lost. Leave this alone and go listen to
anything with Freddie...even if you hate the Freddie stuff...even if you hate Queen...although if
you do hate Queen, this review will mean nothing to you and you'll probably never see it in the
first place.

Digipak with 16 page book of lyrics, notes and photos. "Their sole 1971 LP straddled gothic beauty and horror, and remains a surreal blend of joy and madness, a bewitching compound of gothic acid-folk, Canterbury whimsy and pop melody, complete with Pre-Raphaelite female backing vocals and highly ornate string arrangements...Fuchsia was unpredictable yet teemed with melody: eloquent string arrangements and rock rhythms collided and meshed with results veering from tempestuous to pastoral. 'Gone with the Mouse', and 'A Tiny Book' brought Syd Barrett-esque naiveté, 'Shoes and Ships' and the Durant/Chudley Louise-era collaboration 'Another Nail' were set to sweeping orchestral arrangements, while 'The Nothing Song' hovered in the realm of psychedelia . Then they added dreamy pop-rock with Chudley's 'Me and My Kite'(also from the Louise repertoire) and Durant's 'Just Anyone'..."

...a little-noticed self-titled album in 1971 that, true to its name, was a fusion of various currents of early-'70s rock, particularly progressive rock and British folk-rock. While guitarist and lead singer Tony Durant was Fuchsia's main motor as the composer of most of the material, the band's chief distinguishing mark was its three-woman string section, including cellist Madeleine Bland (who also played piano and harmonium) and violinists Janet Rogers and Vanessa Hall-Smith; all three also contributed backing vocals. With fairly tuneful folk-rock-pop-ish songs whose progressions are unconventional enough that you often don't know quite where they're going, it's an interesting effort...Structurally and melodically, the songs ... are complex and unpredictably winding, not conforming to the usual formats and progressions of popular music. The all-woman, three-part string section ... gives the material some orchestral density, and though it's a long way from the thickness of the arrangements of Electric Light Orchestra, some might find the more understated lightness far more likable. The songs and vocals are more aligned with folk-rock, however, in their benign and slightly fanciful storytelling feel, speckled with mentions of water, sky, breeze, a king and his crown, "Me and My Kite," and the like. In parts, "Just Anyone" certainly seems like a nod in the direction of early-'70s Pink Floyd's lightest, most song-oriented material, complete with swooping slide guitar.

Fuchsia is amongst my favourite folkrock albums, after Spirogyra's first and third album. While albums from Trees, Pentangle, Spirogyra, Spriguns were until now more generally known and appreciated, this album never got its deserved attention. It was left unknown for much too long a time. But never-the-less it has all the necessary elements : a powerful play, Pre-Rahaelitic woman's voices, a beautiful male troubadour's voice with sometimes an almost female energy, with second high female voice, with many additional chamber music arrangements, long tracks, strong song structure, and a gifted individual approach. Closest in style comes perhaps Spirogyra's 3rd album, to give you some idea. Both sides are equally pleasant with their additional chamber music arrangements, but perhaps the second side is strongest. These arrangements give the music an extra attractiveness (with a gentle power going in the direction of early Electric Light Orchestra*).

I bought the limited LP-minisleeve CD reissue once. But then I heard about an improved official reissue, with additional booklet, and I thought at first some bonus tracks as well, but they seemed to have preserved these for another issue later. Anyhow I felt obliged again to replace my older unofficial reissue copy for the better one. This replacing seemed to have happened to me lots of times already, not only from LP-reissue to cd much more often with improvements with CD's (Langsyne, Vashti Bunyan, Extradition, Linda Perhacs). In all these cases it was worth the improvement, because all these newer reissues showed much more care and love for the music, as well as in its presentation. (Langsyne I kept both reissues because they had interesting differences ; first reissues from LP to CD, like with Dr.Strangely Strange hardly were improvements, except for Extradition). I assume with this reissue that the remastering will give a better sound, but still I prefer to check on the best equipment to be really sure what is the difference. The booklet with the complete history of the band, the issue and the band members, and a colour picture of the band, are nice to see included with this version. As you can see the background colour on the original picture has been left out. This detail I don't see as a real improvement, because it makes the purple with black so contrasting that it gives a more sad / mourning vibe, less moody, like the music. ° There I prefer the original cover. The music at first seems to be more clear to. It makes my listening experience a bit different. Very difficult to say which version I prefer.

But I can at least say I'm very glad this release makes it possible for anyone to purchase the album at normal price. For the UK acid folkrock collector the album itself is of course a must-have.

01. GONE WITH THE MOUSE (4’59”)
02. A TINY BOOK (8’03”)
03. ANOTHER NAIL (6’57”)
04.
