Steve Schieberl would like this dance, Portland.

[OPTIMAL BPM] Recently, Steve Schieberl has taken to walking nearly six miles from his Southeast Portland house to his work at an animation and interactive studio in Old Town. It gives him time to think, reflect and get a little exercise. But today he took the bus. “I’m pretty sore from dancing all night,” the 31-year-old says. “I can’t really stay out and only sleep three hours anymore.”

For the past three years, Schieberl has recorded and performed electronic dance music under the name Let’s Go Outside (a saying inspired by his penchant for skydiving, base jumping and picnics) with the intent to get people to dance. “I know a lot of people who make dance music that have never danced before in their lives—and it shows in their music and their tempo selection,” Schieberl says, laughing. “For me it’s always been about 130-133 [beats per minute]—if you are right in that range you can keep people dancing all night without losing breath and stressing their bodies.”

Tempo aside, Let’s Go Outside’s music is malleable and shifting—ranging from hard, Detroit-inspired techno to dub and even ambient pieces. It’s among the city’s best electronic music, though you’d be forgiven for not knowing the dude. He rarely plays here.

Instead, Schieberl (who was born in Italy and moved to the States after grade school) has shifted most of his focus to Europe, a continent that really appreciates dance culture. There, the music is free from the negative connotation and stigma that bogs down stateside shows (it’s all drugs and raves!), and it’s not uncommon for thousands of people to cram into a sweaty building at 2 am to hear a DJ’s set. Let’s Go Outside found a home on Glasgow’s Soma Records after randomly sending a demo their way, and spent three months in early 2008 playing dance parties all over Europe—from London’s famed Fabric club to a converted church in Brussels. “You don’t really realize how strange it is to make this kind of music until you go somewhere and you see so many people that are into it,” Schieberl says. “It’s basically the way that people attend rock shows over there. It’s a normal thing to go dancing all night.”

Schieberl is working hard to keep the party going. In January, he released his debut record, A Picnic With the Hunters, and this fall he has made three DJ mixes, a handful of new tracks and is readying his own label, Slant Records, for a February debut. The hard part is getting Portland to dance.

SEE IT: Let’s Go Outside plays the Rotture Friday, Dec. 5, with Bryan Zentz, Pipedream and Killbox. 9 pm. $3. 21+.

Superfly Productions and A.C. Entertainment are proud to announce the dates for the eighth annual Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival. Confirmed to take place June 11 - 14, 2009, the four-day festival will once again be held on the same beautiful, 700-acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee, 60 miles southeast of Nashville.

Bonnaroo on amazon.com

Ticket pre-sales for the festival will begin on December 4, 2008 and go through December 31st. These tickets will be specially priced ticket levels available exclusively for early purchase. VIP tickets will also be available during this time. In an unprecedented move, during our holiday pre-sale, general admission tickets will be available as well for five (5) payments of $50.00 plus applicable fees through our payment plan. To promote the pre-sale, Bonnaroo and comedian Lewis Black worked together to create a hilariously manic Crazy-Eddie inspired video. A link for viewing it is below:

Consistently and successfully looking for ways to improve the festival each year, Bonnaroo’s eighth promises to build on the triumphs of the previous seven in every way. From its music programming to the non-music attractions, activities and art, the promoters are already hard at work adding new and exciting elements to create yet another legendary weekend. Since it’s inception in 2002, the festival has evolved into an incomparable multi-faceted entertainment experience, swiftly earning its status as the country’s premier music and arts event.

Bonnaroo continues to make a strong impact on the American music industry. The festival has served as a launching pad for such popular artists as Norah Jones, Jack Johnson, Robert Randolph, My Morning Jacket, Ray Lamontagne, Matisyahu, and many others. A creative and cultural mega-success, Bonnaroo has also featured a staggeringly diverse range of world-class acts such as Bob Dylan, Metallica, Neil Young, Radiohead, Willie Nelson, The Police, Pearl Jam, Tom Petty, Tool, Wilco, The Dave Matthews Band, James Brown, The White Stripes, The Dead, Regina Spektor, Widespread Panic, Death Cab For Cutie, Elvis Costello, Amadou and Mariam, Beck, Against Me!, The Black Crowes, Alison Krauss, Bright Eyes, Bonnie Raitt, Steve Earle, Jurassic 5, Modest Mouse, The Mars Volta, Common, Burning Spear, the Flaming Lips, among so many others.

The festival is also starting to make quite an impact on the comedy industry as well, as it has featured some of today’s best comedians working today. From Chris Rock, Lewis Black, Flight of the Concords, David Cross and Fred Armisen to Jim Norton, Patton Oswalt, Zach Galifianakis, Janeane Garofalo and Brian Posehn, Bonnaroo is considered to be an essential play in any comedian’s touring plans.

The four-day festival will once again be held on the same 700-acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee, 60 miles southeast of Nashville. Given the gloomy state of the economy, Bonnaroo tapped comedian Lewis Black to film a faux Crazy Eddie style promo for the shindig — you know, to liven things up and entice potential ticket buyers to take advantage of advance discounted pre-sales, which go on sale on December 4, 2008 and go through December 31st. Even better, the promoters are offering an installment plan! That's right. For just five easy payments of $50, you can go to Bonnaroo 2009 and see the greatest names in rock and comedy. Click here and Lewis will tell you how to do it. Operators are standing by right now.

It's one of rock's bigger mysteries: on the morning of February 1, 1995, 27-year-old Richey James Edwards, guitarist/lyricist for Welsh rabble-rousers Manic Street Preachers, rode off after checking out of a London hotel-- and was never heard from again. His abandoned car turned up two weeks later near a bridge known to attract potential suicides, yet his body was never found, and unsubstantiated claims of Edwards sightings persisted for years.

Yesterday (November 23) Edwards' family made the decision to close this tragic chapter in the guitarist's saga, at least on paper, updating his legal status from "missing" to "presumed dead," according to an NME.com report.

Welsh paper the Western Mail quotes the family's lawyer as saying the decision relects "an acceptance that his affairs have got to be sorted. That's not the same as an acceptance that he is dead."

A spokesperson for the Manics, meanwhile, offered the following to the Western Mail: "The band has been aware this was coming. This is the parents' choice and the band is happy to go with what the parents decide is best. We all dream Richey will come back one day. You hope he is still around somewhere. But it is no longer a realistic hope and if this offers some kind of closure then the band will be content with that."

The remaining Manics-- frontman James Dean Bradfield, bassist Nicky Wire, and drummer Sean Moore-- have been recording a new album with Steve Albini using lyrics penned by Edwards before his disappearance. "Finally it feels like the right time to use them," they wrote on their website earlier this month.

The band is mulling a couple working titles at present-- Journal for Plague Lovers and I Know I Believe in Nothing But It Is My Nothing-- and claims we can look forward to "a record that celebrates the genius of [Edwards'] words, full of love, anger, intelligence, and respect. We have to make this great. Wish us luck."

For the moment, however, the Preachers are proselytizing in Southeast Asia.

Village Voice writer Robert Sietsema clearly has the coolest job ever. Taking as a starting point the general tone of Fountains of Wayne's "Mexican Wine," he explores why Mexican wine.

Why Mexican wine specifically? I set out to see if I could discover the reason, but first I had to find some actual Mexican wine. I’d been hearing for years that the wines of Baja, California were getting better and better, but when I scoured local liquor stores to find examples, I came up empty. Chalk it up to New York’s liquor stores being so small, or maybe Baja wines are still too obscure.

Eventually, I stumbled on a bottle at LaNell’s in Red Hook, Brooklyn, a place that specializes in organic wines, female-made wines, and New York State bourbons. The wine was a Jubileo 2005, made in Guadalupe, Baja, Mexico, a desiccated valley with 20 wineries, 40 miles southeast of Tijuana. The wine is a Meritage, which means that it’s a Bordeaux-style red made with a combination of grapes (usually including cabernet sauvignon and merlot, among others) permitted by California, U.S.A.’s Meritage Association. The winemaker is Laura Zamora, who qualifies as something of a Mexican winemaking superstar, and some of her vines – which require no irrigation, a big plus in Baja’s arid climate – are 60 years old, making them Mexico’s oldest.

He even kinda/sorta comes up with a plausible read of the tune!

Yelling loud as hell over the song on some fake DJ Clue/DJ Kay Slay/DJ Khaled/Funkmaster Flex ish and I can't hear the damned song but 10 seconds of it (mics have volume control...thanks)

B. Mixtape "exclusives" that are on the radio - if its dope its dope, don't need the fake labeling

C. Overall wackness

* NOTE - These mixtapes are dirty versions, no radio edits! *

Check The BlackRadioIsBack.com Mixtape Of The Week Archives when you get a chance!

Here goes:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_muVCaidTVvQ/SScMtxw3OYI/AAAAAAAAD7A/ujPkJSkhuXw/s400/Various_Artists_Lets_Take_It_Back_To_The_Old_Schoo-front-large.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5271195869452384642" />
DJ Finesse & Sounds of Pleasure: Lets Take It Back To The Old School Vol. 3

Tracklisting:

1. Most genres will be considered, but please keep in mind this is a family oriented event and thus acts that maintain a high level of professionalism and fun atmosphere will be accepted.

Sponsors include Air Tran, My ATL TV, The Sunday Paper, Cooper Atlanta, Marta and the city of Atlanta. Compensation is considered on how long the act plays and the name value of the act. All acts will be paid.

All Sonicbids members will have a strong consideration, however they are looking mostly for Georgia based artists. This year's main stage headliner is Julianne Hough of ABC's Dancing With the Stars and country music fame. The main stage will be televised across the country and be visible by more than 30 million homes.

Beginning with children activities, Underground Atlanta will buzz with activities for the entire family! As 2009 nears, the main stage will light up with live performances and the 800 pound Peach will begin its decent just before the clock strikes midnight.

For more info, visit: http://www.rocksolid-entertainment.com

Blue Horns’ attention span is short; its rock ’n’ roll songs are even shorter.

[POST-JANGLE] Almost every question I have for Blue Horns is interrupted by joyous shouts from the regulars at Southeast Portland’s Holman’s Bar and Grill, and hollers from the band itself. That’s what I get for scheduling our interview for 7 pm on Election Night.

“Our sets are always super-short,” guitarist/songwriter Brian Park says during a short lull, the 28-year-old’s eyes barely visible behind long, stringy hair restrained with a headband. “We only like to play for half an hour. Even if we’re really great, it should just make people more excited to see us next time.”

There should be many more next times for the group—Park, guitarist Colin Howard, drummer Brian Kramer and bassist Andrew Stern—whose self-titled debut is out this week. The album (recorded in two days last spring at Justin Higgins’ Old Standard studio) is full of catchy, throwback rock; at eight songs and just over 30 minutes, it’s sequenced like the vintage LPs the band reveres.

Most of the album is composed of skittering, incessant foot-stompers; the kind of songs that sound good on first listen but five times better after frequent spins and a few beers. Taking cues from early-’80s post-punk and jangle pop, Blue Horns is the rare guitar band that can actually get a Portland crowd to dance.

Part of that is due to Park’s unusual vocals. His wobbly, nervous chanting is a mix between Wilderness’ James Johnson and a rabid dog. His lyrics are declarations—“This is all we have,” or “Let’s go hunting”—and the band’s sturdy, intricate dual-guitar attack, coupled with the shuffling rhythm section, continually pushes tracks forward before they come to sudden, abrupt halts.

“There’s always a point like two minutes into [a song] where you’ve heard pretty much the whole song, and then it carries on for another five minutes with two breakdowns and it never ends,” Howard says, looking up from his drink at the increasingly favorable election results. “That’s what we try not to do.”

SEE IT: Blue Horns plays Backspace with Bark Hide and Horn, and Resin Hits on Saturday, Nov. 15. 8 pm. $5. All ages.
