by chris
ok, few bits and pieces to cover in this post. first of all, get ready for the fengler ssg mix to drop at the end of this week. we’ve just got it, and all i can say is ‘wow’. and to top it off, next week mx15 will be from the lovely ms eli verveine.

next up, pete is too modest, so i’ll have to do it: if you haven’t already seen it, i strongly recommend heading over to RA and reading his interview with move d. i think RA has had some really excellent features this year, and in my completely biased opinion, this is definitely ranks among the very best.

while on the topic of RA, i have to say something about their latest podcast from some dude called emerson todd. to be honest, i have been participating and involved in the melbourne/australian dance scene since around 1997 and i’ve never heard of the guy (admittedly he is from sydney, but i thought i knew most of the main djs/crews there, obviously not). he might be a nice guy, he might be a nice dj, but the feeling amongst the ssgs is that this was a disappointing choice as the first australian to do an RA’cast. in our opinion, there are a host of djs from down under that would have been much more appropriate. with our ssg mixes, we’ve made an effort not to be the slightest bit parochial. our aim, though, is that at some stage in the near future is to get a mix or two from australian artists that we think are really worth listening to.

speaking of (mis)representing, i am really quite dissatisfied with fact magazine’s list of the supposedly best 20 mixes of 2008. i’ve got two issues with it. first, it strikes me as attempting to present itself as a list which goes across genres and is reasonably inclusive of different styles. i cannot comment on the quality of all the mixes mentioned, as i have not heard many of them, but i do not think it is a particularly broad cross-section. some genres are rather over-represented, while techno has only one clear inclusion, and there are no exemplars of the deep house sound that has been so pervasive this year (the closest they get with house are the metro area and prins thomas mixes, but neither of these fit with the deep house sound of ‘08). my second problem comes down to there being only representative of techno (yeah, optimo is in there but they only 1/2 count) and the inclusion is deetron. if you are going to put a mix in there, you could do much, much better with that. there are so many possibly candidates, but logical places to start would be with the dozzy labyrinth set, the cio d’or modyfier mix, or the berghain 2 cd by herr dettmann. this has been a fantastic year for techno in my books and it is a shame not to see that reflected. anyway, enough complaining. you’ll be getting my list at some stage in the coming weeks.

as for good mixes, i’ve been absolutely drowning in them recently. here is just a small sample:

santiago salazar september 08 mix: santiago is part of the UR crew and lately has a new label, historia y violencia, with ssg favourite silent servant. you can read an interview with them about it here. anyway, like anyone associated with UR, the man can spin.

i’d also strongly advise paying a visit to infinitestatemachine for their latest guest mix from m50. it’s a beauty.

and last, but most certainly not least, pete was a guest on ‘to and fro’, a show on melbourne’s triple r radio station (yes, these still exist it seems). head over here for the tracklisting and download link. as you’d expect, a quality selection from one of the ssgs. go team!

ok, more links will have to come another night. this ssg has to sleep.

A lesson in musical intensity, direct and exclusive from techno music pioneer Anthony Child.
Fresh from remixing Thom Yorke and ripping up club nights in São Paulo, sushi fan and globe-trotting techno legend Surgeon has kindly put together this splendid mix for Spannered.

It’s ‘trippy, mostly broken new stuff and a few old bits’, he tells us. Well, after numerous rotations we can honestly say that it’s deeper than the Mariana Trench and heavier than a swimming pool full of osmium. Enjoy.

This album really deserves 4.5 stars. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to get into the
Canterbury Scene. One of Caravan's finest.

If I Could Do It All Over Again I'd Do It All Over You - This is a light and jazzy song, with an
interesting beat with the overlapping vocals.

And I Wish I Were Stoned/Don't Worry - This is one of my favorite songs on the album. It is quite
catchy, especially the chorus. It is a simple but relaxing tune.

As I Feel I Die - The song starts out slow and reminiscent of the Beatles song She's Leaving Home.
It speeds up into a jazz rock track. The drums are very good on this song.

With An Ear To The Ground You Can Make It/Martinian/Only Cox/Reprise - The keyboards on this track
are great. It's not a very memorable track though.

Hello Hello - The rhythm section gets an applause on this track. The harmonies are very nice too.

Asforteri 25 - The background melody in this song combined with the vocals makes it a pleasant short
track.

Can't Be Long Now/Francoise/For Richard/Warlock - The beginning is a great flute melody. Then, at a
faster tempo, there's the classic Canterbury jazzy sound with organ and guitar. The sax solo is also
amazing. When the flute comes back in, it is an excellent combination. For the last part of the
track, it's back to the standard Caravan jazz rock.

Limits - A nice little ending track with some flute. Nothing extraordinary, but it's alright.

Smaug, the Final Formula, Devil Got Five and Black Maria
Friday, September 26, 2008
PT’s Club Inferno, Denver
Better Than: Being an indie rock snob.

PT’s Club Inferno is not my first choice of venues to attend for a show because strip clubs give me the creeps. But when I tried to find parking, the staff was very nice and polite and the girl taking money at the door was cool and even asked about my M.I.A. t-shirt. Going upstairs to the room where the music was being performed I saw the schedule and my heart sank a little because I had just missed Fanatics — one of the greatest hardcore bands Colorado has yet produced. However, there was plenty more music coming up.

The room I found myself in was clearly used for other purposes when shows weren’t happening. Low, circular stages were arranged around the room, a black cage sat in the center and wide couches lined the walls of one wing with a dimly lit bar at the other end next to a well-lit dressing room. As I stepped in front of the expansive stage, the Final Formula started up. The act was a five-piece playing an odd hybrid of nü metal, rap rock and At the Drive-In style hardcore. The frontman put a lot of himself into the performance, while the drummer created fascinating percussive textures and some of the crunchier guitar riffing was excellent. Although the power ballad-esque “Hold on to Me” nearly made me laugh, I have to admit. Formula ended its set with a lively cover of Pennywise’s “The Western World.”

Devil Got Five

Devil Got Five, another five-member ensemble, took the stage next. Fronted by a gothic-punk-looking woman wearing a Mr. Bungle T-shirt, the act played a set of songs weighed down by rhythms that were tad too busy and guitar tones that were often too trebly. Despite those shortcomings, the members clearly had their dynamics down. The music recalled Warlock with a better singer. The set opened with “Can’t Abide,” which at first sounded like one of those obnoxious metal songs that attempt to be epic but fail with too much ambition and too little imagination. That impression faded once Devil got warmed up. In all, Devil is a metal band at its best – fun, a little silly but knowing it, arch but not negative. Its music had energy, bite and good spirit.

Photo: Tom Murphy

Black Maria

Albuquerque’s Black Maria was yet another band with five people (a theme, apparently for the night). Its music was crushing, dark and lumbering yet also somehow energetic. It’s tempting to compare the act to Black Sabbath with its weighty punch, but really it sounded more like Soundgarden, only more psychedelic, heavier and far scarier. The whole band played with the fervor of one of those legendary hardcore bands with the fiery frenzy of activity taking that aesthetic to its final, murderous conclusion. For my money, Black Maria was the best band of the night.

Photo: Tom Murphy

Smaug

Smaug from Colorado Springs, who closed out the night, threw me for a loop at first. At the beginning of its set, I flashed to early Metallica crossed with pre-Turbo Judas Priest. Alton, the band’s frontman, was an unlikely character to be projecting such a soaringly theatrical voice. He was, however, equally skilled at casting forth growly death metal vocals. The guy wore studded bracers, which was pretty amusing, but there was no denying his charisma, energy and talent. As the band’s set progressed, the band mined the same terrain of late ‘80s acts like Fates Warning and Testament.

-- Tom Murphy

Personal Bias: I can’t stand 99% of metal, but when it’s good, I’m the last person to be a snob about it.
Random Detail: Alton used to be in the grindcore band Aberrant.
By the Way: Oddly, a lot of the metal and hardcore crowds I deal with are more polite and less violent than certain groups of people who otherwise look down on that whole thing.

Hello, Into The Groove today centers around one man, a man with a vision, not about entering the Halls of Fame, but to use his leadership to turn those involved in the gang life, into something more positive to the community. Founding Zulu Nation, a group of socially & politically aware rappers..he made Peace, Unity, Love and having fun his motto. Along the way he's created some great music as well. He stood at the base of electro-funk, his name ...Afrika Bambaataa. Three great titles here, enjoy ! Btw at Rhotation (04) you can find Shango Funk Theology at (31) Unity with JB

*****

Kevin Donovan (born April 19, 1957) was a founding member of the Bronx River Projects-area street gang, The Savage Seven. Due to the explosive growth of the gang, it later became known as the Black Spades, and he rose to the position of Division Leader. After a life-changing visit to Africa, he changed his name to Afrika Bambaataa Aasim, adopting the name of the Zulu chief Bhambatha, who led an armed rebellion against unfair economic practices in early 20th century South Africa that can be seen as a precursor to the anti-Apartheid movement.

After he returned from his life changing trip to Africa, Bambaataa decided to use his leadership to turn those involved in the gang life into something more positive to the community. This began the development of which later became known as the Universal Zulu Nation, a group of socially & politically aware rappers, B-boys, graffiti artists and other people involved in Hip Hop culture. By 1977, Bambaataa began organizing block parties all around the South Bronx. Bambaataa had deejayed with his own sound system at the Bronx River Community Center, with Mr. Biggs, Queen Kenya, and Cowboy, who accompanied him in performances in the community. Because of his prior status in the Black Spades, he already had an established Army party crowd drawn from former members of the gang. He became known as one of the best DJs in the Bronx.

About a year later he reformed the group, calling it the Zulu Nation. Five b-boys (break dancers) joined him, whom he called the ZULU Kings, and later formed the Zulu Queens, and the Shaka ZULU Kings and Queens. As he continued deejaying, more DJs, rappers, break dancers, graffiti writers, and artists followed him, and he took them under his wing and made them all members of his Zulu Nation. He was also the founder of the SoulSonic Force, which originally consisted of approximately twenty Zulu Nation members. The personnel for the Soul Sonic Force were groups within groups with whom Bambaataa would perform and make records.

In 1982, Hip-Hop artist Fab 5 Freddy was putting together music packages in the largely white downtown Manhattan New Wave clubs, and invited Bam to perform at one of them. Attendance for Bam's parties downtown became so large that he had to move to larger venues. Then the breakthrough came with Planet Rock, it became an immediate hit and stormed the music charts worldwide. The song melded the main melody from Kraftwerk's "Trans-Europe Express" with electronic beats based on their track "Numbers" as well as portions from records by Babe Ruth and Captain Sky - thus creating a new style of music altogether, electro funk. It influenced many styles of electronic and dance music, e.g. freestyle music, house music and techno music.

Afrika Bambaataa's second release around 1983 was "Looking for the Perfect Beat," then later, "Renegades of Funk," both with the same SoulSonic Force. He began working with producer Bill Laswell at Celluloid Records, where he developed and placed two groups on the label: "Time Zone" and "Shango". He recorded "Wildstyle" with Time Zone, and he recorded a collaboration with punk-rocker John Lydon and Time Zone in 1984, "World Destruction". Shango's album Shango Funk Theology was also released by Celluloid in 1984. That same year, Bam and other Hip-Hop celebrities appeared in the movie Beat Street. He also made a landmark recording with James Brown, titled "Unity." It was billed in music industry circles as "the Godfather of Soul meets the Godfather of Hip Hop."

Around October 1985, Bambaataa and other music stars worked on the anti-apartheid album Sun City with Little Steven Van Zandt, Run-D.M.C., Lou Reed, and numerous others. During 1988, he recorded another landmark piece as "Afrika Bambaataa and Family" on Capitol Records, titled The Light[6], featuring Nona Hendryx, UB40, Boy George, George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, and Yellowman. In 1990, Bambaataa made Life magazine's "Most Important Americans of the 20th Century" issue. He was also involved in the anti-apartheid work "Hip Hop Artists Against Apartheid" for Warlock Records. He teamed with the Jungle Brothers to record the album Return to Planet Rock (The Second Coming).

Bambaataa recorded erratically during the '90s, reviving the Time Zone moniker with several singles and 2 album releases, Thy Will B Funk (92) and Warlocks And Witches, Computer Chips, Microchips And You (96). He returned to the mainstream in 1997 with Zulu Groove. In 2000, Afrika Bambaataa collaborated with Leftfield on the song "Afrika Shox", the first single from Leftfield's Rhythm and Stealth. "Afrika Shox" The new millennium brought the release of Hydraulic Funk on Strictly Hype, and Electro Funk Breakdown followed in early 2001. Bambaataa's last album, Dark Matter Moving At The Speed Of Light came in 2004 another electro/breakbeat classic. On September 27, 2007, Afrika Bambaataa was nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

***** ***** ***** ***** *****

Afrika Bambaataa & Soulsonic Force - Planet Rock (86 ^ 99mb)

Afrika Bambaataa, was known as a talented DJ before his single "Planet Rock" came out in 1982 on Tommy Boy. The song, which sampled (actually re-recorded in the studio) elements of Kraftwerk's "Trans-Europe Express" and was the first R&B track to use an 808, helped define a new movement in music, electro, which then inspired Miami bass and Detroit techno, and pushed the Bambaataa's status toward near iconic. Planet Rock,The Album, is a collection of singles that came out four years later, and captures Bambaataa's energy and innovation whilst working with Soulsonic Force . The original 12" version of the title track is enough to make Planet Rock, The Album worthwhile, the equally interesting "Renegades of Funk" (in remix form) and "Searching for the Perfect Beat" make it a superb compilation.

1- Planet Rock (7:31)
2- Looking For The Perfect Beat (7:02)
3 - Renegades of Funk (6:46)
4 - Frantic Situation (Frantic Mix) (3:49)
5 - Who You Funkin' With (Feat.Grandmaster Melle Mel) (6:23)
6 - Go Go Pop (Feat.Trouble Funk) (6:00)
7 - They Made A Mistake (5:31)

***** ***** ***** ***** *****
Afrika Bambaataa & Family - The Light (88 ^ 159mb)

Diverse personalities and styles are the hook for this 1988 album, which isn't particularly an Afrika Bambaataa project, but a Family effort . The first Time Zone single was the 1983 electro song "The Wildstyle" which featured music from a German project called Wunderwerke. The song became very popular among breakdancers at the time. In 1984, Time Zone released their most well-known single, "World Destruction". A collaboration between Bambaataa, ex-Sex Pistol/Public Image Ltd. leader John Lydon, and producer/bassist Bill Laswell, this single is the first real rapcore song, predating Run-DMC and Aerosmith's "Walk This Way". Although the song was critically acclaimed, Bambaataa put the Time Zone project on hold while he worked on other projects. In 1992, Bambaataa revived the project with the single "Zulu War Chant" which was well-received among fans of old school hip hop. Time Zone released a handful of singles in the early-1990s which were compiled in the 1992 album Thy Will B Funk. In 1995, the band released another album titled Warlocks and Witches, Computer Chips, Microchips and You. The album featured contributions from George Clinton and his P-Funk Horns. In 2005, Bambaataa again revived the Time Zone moniker for an album of breakbeats titled Everyday People: The Breakbeat Party Album.

01 - Zulu Interlude #1 (0:15)
02 - This Is Time Zone (1:33)
03 - Funky Beeper (2:26)
04 - Unity Part 7 (The Rapmania Live Mix) (5:00)
05 - Mazuma (2:04)
06 - Throw Ya Fuckin' Hands Up (4:35)
07 - One Time 4 Ya Mind (2:56)
08 - Godfather (Take You Higher) (4:42)
09 - Zulu Interlude #2 (0:12)
10 - Fugitive (4:53)
11 - Keepin' It Real (4:46)
12 - Funkadelic Shack (4:37)
13 - Turn This Mutha Out - Part 1 (4:25)
14 - Zulu Interlude #3 (0:10)
15 - (It's Alright Now) Think I'll Make It Anyhow (3:46)
16 - Ugly Gals (2:53)
17 - D.C.

I have always loved Jane their pleasant sound, I got familiar with it when their legendary 2- LP Live
At Home was released, late 1976. OK, it’s simple, the lyrics are almost hilarious and the German accent
is very obviously but their blend of bluesrock, melodic rock and Heavy Prog often carries me away to
a .. ‘Progressive Blues Heaven’, especially because of the unique combination of pleasant keyboard
layers, moving electric guitarwork and warm vocals (often with a melancholical undertone). When I
heard about the terrible news that Peter Panka had passed away on June 28th 2007 (only 59 years old)
I felt very, very sad. It’s great that only a few months later (on November 23rd) friends and fellow
musicians organised a Tribute To Peter Panka tour, this concert is from Hannover. The line-up consists
of the original members Charly Maucher (bass and vocals) and Werner Nadolny (keyboards), veteran
Fritz Randow (drums, once Eloy) and the gitarists/singers Klaus Waltz en Arndt Schultz.

During the concert the emphasis is on the tracks from the Live At Home 2-LP: the opener
All My Friends (warm organ sound and wonderful bluesy guitar), Fire Water Earth & Air (beautiful work
on keyboards like the string-ensemble sound and Hammond organ and tasteful solos on guitar and
synthesizer), Rest Of My Life (very compelling), Daytime (melancholical undertone and strong build-up
to an emotional climax with lush keyboards, sensitive guitar and heavy drums), Windows/Spain (Jane
at their most progressive including lots of improvisations like an impressive part featuring a kind
of ‘guitar wall’ supporting a psychedelic inspired synthesizer solo on the Moog Liberation), Wind (fluent
with organ and propulsive guitar and drums), River (featuring former bass player Martin Hess who
looks like a cross between Arthur Brown and Keith Richards), Out In The Rain (including acoustic guitar,
delicate interplay between bass and a strings-sound and a moving guitar solo) and
Hangman (tasteful guitarwork like early Wishbone Ash and a flashy synthesizer solo). Everything during
this concert gets musically an extra dimension because of the way the musicians show their
appreciation for Peter Panka, very touchy! The song Tomorrow, from the latest album with Peter
Panka, sounds as a modern variation on the early Jane sound, very distinctive and tasteful and during
So So Long the stage is crowded with all musicians that joined Jane on this concert like Martin Hesse,
drummer Nossi Noske (once Birthcontrol), Peter Panka’s daughter Denise Panka (on the
socalled ‘Stand-Tom’) and band members of
Harlis (2 songs with pleasant bluesrock between the Spencer Davis Group and Eric Clapton),
Jon Symon’s Rockballett Warlock (2 songs, once Peter Panka played with them in front of 100.000
spectators!) and the Jutta Weinhold Band (composition Silence, not really my cup of tea).

The Bonus Material on the 2 DVD’s contains backstage footage, tour camera work during the
Tribute To Peter Panka Tour 2007 from Germany and Belgium and short interviews with Klaus Meine
and Rudolf Schenker from Scorpions, Martin Hesse and drummer Fritz Randow (Jane, once Eloy).

This is not typical progrock but in my opinion this 2-DVD is a historical German Progressive Rock
document and a very impressive tribute to Peter Panka with lots of great musical highlights, not to be
missed by the many Jane fans.
