I don’t think anyone reading this blog actually listens to these webcasts but a promise is a promise, so here’s a quick list of the remaining live transmissions from the Polish Music Festival in Cracow:

11th Nov. (that’s today!) 19:25 (UTC+1)

a concert of light music (or, where it can’t really be called light, as in the case of Stefan’s aria, a concert of “greatest hits” of Polish music)

Stefan Kisielewski Cosmos I

Wojciech Kilar Vocalise from Polanski’s The Ninth Gate

Mieczysław Karłowicz Pamiętam ciche jasne, złote dnie op. 1 nr 5 (arr. by M. Lewandowski for tenor & orch)

Karol Szymanowski Młodości mej dla Ciebie bije żar – duet from the opera Hagith

Henryk Wars Piano Concerto

Grażyna Bacewicz Overture

Ludomir Różycki Caton’s Waltz from the opera Casanova (III act)

Stanisław Moniuszko Cisza dokoła… Stefan’s recitativo and aria from The Haunted Manor (III act)

Karol Szymanowski Od czasu gdym Cię ujrzał raz duet from the operetta Loteria na mężów (The Husband Lottery)

Władysław Szpilman Waltz in the old style

Wojciech Kilar Piano Concerto

performers: Katarzyna Jagiełło – soprano, Paweł Skałuba – tenor, Peter Jablonski – piano, Polish Radio Orchestra, Łukasz Borowicz - conductor

15th Nov. 19:25 (UTC+1)

Krzysztof Penderecki’s birthday concerto

pieces by Krzysztof Penderecki

Threnody

Viola Concerto

Symphony no. 4

Actions

performers: Grigory Zhislin - viola, Tomasz Stańko - trumpet, Sinfonietta Cracovia, Peter Gülke - conductor

Polish Radio 2 live stream here.

I do hope that at a later date they’ll also air Mykietyn’s Passion, which is being given a second performance during the festival. It was first performed a couple of weeks ago at the Vratislavia Cantans festival in Wroclaw, and the reviewers were elated.

I should also add that the Polish Radio program has an empty spot on 12th November at 19:05. It just says “concert” but no details are given. The festival concert on that day starts at 19:30, so I don’t think they will be transmitting it. But one never knows…

Barack Obama wasn’t just America’s choice to be the next President, as the rest of the world is celebrating the victory of our new Commander-in-Chief. Radiohead’s Thom Yorke was especially happy with the end of the Bush era, so to celebrate, he posted a free remix of “Harrowdown Hill,” a song off his solo album The Eraser. “I humbly donate a remix of ‘Harrowdown Hill’ that was finished ages ago during the band webcasts,” Yorke wrote. “A small reminder of the dark days of Bush’s…” And to think, it was only eight years since Yorke was lobbying for that Nader guy.

A new UK consumer survey suggests that the music industry has three reasons for optimism:

First, the population of illegal downloaders has declined by 10% since '07 deterred by by the threat of ISP and legals action against them and the broad availability of free legal music in the form of streams, downloads and webcasts.

72% of illegal downloaders including teenagers say they'd stop if contacted by their ISP. Only 6% say it wouldn't bother them if the ISP terminated their contract. The concerns may be driven by the finding that 61% mistakenly believe that their downloading is currently being monitored by ISPs.

The growth in available free music is diluting the need to download illegally. 52% of illegal downloaders say there is no need to steal because of the availability of free legal music to download or stream. It points to an opportunity for the music industry as they lisence social networks.

Second, the growing maturity of the digital model and exciting new revenue opportunities.

For the first time the incidence of legal downloaders has crossed the half way mark (51% of consumers) up by...

9% from 47% in 2007. The growth in legal downloading is being
driven mainly by the over 45 year olds up from 28% to 39% and the 35-44 year
olds up from 36% to 44%. 2 out 5 over 35 UK year olds are now buying downloads at
least once a month. The growth is being driven by the perceived
functional advantages of downloads and the ability to
cherry-pick tracks.

YouTube and MySpace addition of paid downloads. 68% of social networks users often discover new music on those sites (83% of MySpace users and 73% of YouTune's) and 50% sometimes recommend artists to others.

New revenue opportunities associated with digital delivery platforms. For example: 12% are willing to pay to watch live webcasts of gigs, and 34% are interested in going to cinemas to watch live gigs or a DVD premiere.

26% would strongly consider selling' music virally via their social network profile or blog

Third, YouTube has overtaken MySpace (41% Vs 25%) as the preferred social network for music and in doing so has reaffirmed the value of music videos.

Nearly 1 in 2 (47%) prefer to watch a music video if it's available and a surprising 71% say the artist's official music video is the most desirable digital content.

71% say they can find all the music videos they want on YouTube

YouTube's ecommerce platform provides a two-fold monetization opportunity - a share of the streaming-related advertising income and a share of digital download revenue.

Last night's portion of the DNC had a different soundtrack: Rage Against The Machine played a protest show at the Denver Coliseum in support of Iraq Veterans Against the War then led a protest march of thousands to the Pepsi Center to present a list of demands that, as MTV reports, included "an immediate withdrawal from Iraq and reparations for the Iraqi people" to Obama's camp. No word on how that went, but this is what the performance looked and sounded like. Oddly, not as impassioned as this. Likely more meaningful for the meaningful-core fans out there was Unconventional '08, an Obama-themed show that took place at Manifest Hope Gallery, also in Denver, hosted by San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom. Early in the evening there were performances by Silversun Pickups, Nada Surf, DJ Z-Trip, and Democratic blog favorites Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and Cold War Kids, but it was the late-night set that birthed an indie rock supergroup:

(Actually, on second thought, don't.) In the spirit of various previous webcasts and last-minute announcements such as this one, Radiohead have made the last-minute announcement that they will webcast tonight's (August 28) gig in Santa Barbara, California live, warts and all.

Writes Colin Greenwood on Dead Air Space,

Hello! To celebrate the end of a brilliant tour, we're going to webcast the last show here in America. We'll be playing live in Santa Barbara, at the Bowl. It's one of our favourite places to play; I think we've ended tours there before, once even playing a cover of [Neil Young's] ' cinnamon girl '. It's not too big, in fact it's very intimate, a small arena with a dirt floor, set in pretty countryside. It should be a special night, for lots of reasons, and we're going to try and share as much of it as we can on the webcast. Nigel [Godrich], our producer, will be helping out getting it to you, so if it goes wrong....It's live!

Thank you so much to everyone who's come and seen us this year; it has truly been the most special and exciting tour for all of us.

Webcast details to follow...
x

Colin

Tonight's gig at the Bowl is scheduled to begin to 6:30 p.m. Pacific time, with Liars opening (no word whether they'll be webcasted too, but boy I hope so). Best to set up shop in front of your computer around then and stay tuned to Dead Air Space for instructions. So that's why it's all dreary here in Chicago today...
